Obtaining a Hungarian Criminal Record Certificate (Erkölcsi Bizonyítvány) with Apostille

Who Can Apply 
The certificate can only be requested by the individual concerned (regardless of nationality or residence), for their own data.

Application Methods from Abroad 
You may apply in person at a Hungarian embassy or consulate in your country of residence , or you can authorize a representative in Hungary via a Power of Attorney to submit the application on your behalf.

Official Fees
Obtaining the criminal record certificate in Hungary is free of charge up to four times per year. An Apostille stamp is a separate official service: the Hungarian authorities charge about €15 per document for issuing an Apostille.

Timeline 
Standard processing by the Hungarian Criminal Records Authority takes about 8 business days from the time the application is received to issue the certificate . If an urgent (express) procedure is used, the certificate can be ready in as soon as 1–5 business days  (often next working day in the fastest case for in-person applications). Obtaining the Apostille legalization typically adds about 1–3 additional working days , as the document must be submitted to the competent authority (e.g. Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Hungary) for the Apostille stamp. In summary, once we have your signed power of attorney and required information, we expect to secure your certificate and Apostille within roughly 2 weeks (about 10 working days) under normal processing. Including international shipping to your address, the total turnaround is usually around 2–3 weeks. (Delays can occasionally occur due to mail delivery times or public holidays, but 2–3 weeks is a typical estimate for the complete process.)

Delivery of Documents 
After the Apostille is obtained, we will send the finalized certificate (original hard copy of the criminal record certificate with the Apostille attached) to you via international courier or registered post. Delivery times vary by country, but we will use a reliable express service so that you receive the document as quickly as possible (usually a few days worldwide). Further Details 
The Hungarian criminal record certificate is issued only in the Hungarian language  and is valid for 90 days from its date of issue . The Apostille attached to it certifies the authenticity of the signature and seal on the certificate so that it will be recognized in other countries under The Hague Apostille Convention . 

Please note that the Apostille does not translate the document; it simply legalizes it. If the destination country or institution requires an official translation of the certificate into another language, you would need to obtain that separately. (Many countries accept the certificate with Apostille as is, but for non-Hungarian speakers, you may later choose to have it translated by a certified translator in either the destination country or in Hungary.)
